Secure Payments and Escrow: How Your Money Stays Protected in the Online Music Business

When you do music business online, the biggest fear comes down to one of two things: if you're a buyer, sending the money and never getting the work; if you're a producer, delivering the work and never getting paid. That lack of trust puts both sides on edge and kills a lot of deals before they even start. The escrow system exists precisely to solve this problem.

In this post, we'll walk through what escrow is, how it works on RITM, and why keeping your payments and communication on-platform protects you.

What Is Escrow?

Escrow is, put simply, a trusted vault. The buyer pays, but the money doesn't go straight to the seller; it's held at a neutral point (the vault). Once the work is delivered and the buyer approves it, the payment is released to the seller. In other words:

  • The buyer never loses their money without seeing the work.
  • The seller knows that once they deliver, their payment is guaranteed.

Both sides are protected at the same time. Nobody has to get stuck in a "you do it first" or "you pay first" standoff.

How Does the Flow Work on RITM?

When you take on a job on RITM, here's how the process unfolds:

  1. The deal: The buyer accepts the offer, and the payment goes into the secure vault.
  2. Delivery: The producer completes the work and marks it "delivered."
  3. Approval window: A 48-hour window opens for the buyer to review the work.
  4. Release: If the buyer approves, the payment goes to the producer. If nothing happens within 48 hours, the system approves it automatically — nobody is left hanging.

If something goes wrong, the buyer can dispute it within this window, and the case goes to the RITM team for review. That way, disagreements don't come down to the word of two people left to settle it alone — they go to a neutral arbiter.

The beauty of escrow is this: because the payment sits in a "paid, but not yet released to anyone" state, both sides are motivated to complete the work in good faith.

Why Is Going Off-Platform Risky?

Sometimes the other party will suggest settling the deal over WhatsApp or by direct bank transfer "to skip the commission." As tempting as it sounds, that's the single step that leaves you most exposed. Because the moment you go off-platform:

  • Your escrow protection disappears. The money changes hands directly; if there's a problem, there's no getting it back.
  • Your dispute support is gone. There's no arbiter in the middle; it's your word against theirs.
  • Your history and evidence vanish. Even if you file a complaint, you have nothing to back it up.

A scammer's favorite line is "let's just handle this off the platform." Because the only thing protecting them is everything that protects you being switched off.

Keep Your Messaging Safe Too

Messaging inside RITM isn't just for communication; it matters for your safety too. That's why the system automatically flags messages that share a phone number, IBAN, or social media account for review. This isn't a block — it's a shield: its purpose is to protect you from the "let's settle this outside" trap.

As long as you keep both communication and payments on the platform, your protection, your history, and your support stay right there with you.

A Small Commission, A Lot of Peace of Mind

Yes, the platform takes a small commission. But what you get in return is substantial: payment security, dispute resolution, verified profiles, and a record of the entire process. Having a system on your side when something goes wrong makes that commission more than worth it.

You can see how commission rates change by plan on the Pricing page — the higher your producer plan, the lower the rate.

In Short

Secure payments are the backbone of the online music business. Thanks to escrow, neither the buyer nor the seller is left exposed. All you have to do is simple: keep your communication and payments on the platform. The way to stay safe is to never switch off the safety.
